Water, Sanitation & Hygiene
Life flows from clean water. Accessibility leads to dignity.
The Water Crisis
In the Teso region, over 40% of the population lacks access to safe drinking water. Women and children walk an average of 5 kilometers daily to fetch water from open ponds sharing with animals—water that is often contaminated with typhoid and cholera.
This daily struggle keeps children out of school and prevents women from engaging in economic activities. It is a barrier to all forms of progress.
Our Comprehensive Solution
YWOU implements a holistic approach that goes beyond just drilling wells. We build capacity.
Infrastructure Development
We drill deep-water boreholes and protect natural springs to ensure year-round access to clean water.
Sanitation Education
We promote Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) to end open defecation and encourage the building of latrines.
Hygiene Promotion
We conduct handwashing campaigns in schools and distribute sanitation kits to adolescent girls.
Real Impact
"School absenteeism has dropped by nearly two-thirds now that children aren't getting sick as frequently," notes a local headteacher. Families are also saving money previously used for typhoid treatment to pay for school fees.
